Oral Surgery and Extractions

Safely Providing Oral Surgery And Tooth Extraction Services

At Eddleman Dental, we offer surgical extractions for our patients who need a tooth removed. Our goal is always to practice preventative dentistry, and we will always take measures to save your tooth rather than perform an extraction. However, sometimes extractions are necessary. We are here to provide expert, high quality care to make your oral surgery and extractions, and your recovery, as easy as possible.

Tooth Extraction

At Eddleman Dental, we will always do our very best to save your tooth. We will only perform an extraction if it is undeniably your best option. If your tooth needs to be pulled, it could be due to:

  • Severe Tooth Decay: If you have tooth decay that has progressed to an advanced stage, we may need to pull the decayed tooth. This will prevent further damage and will help relieve you of any pain or discomfort the tooth may be causing you.

  • Periodontal Disease: Advanced gum disease can cause a tooth to loosen. If the infection spreads to the bone, it is best to remove the tooth. Gum disease is preventable, and pulling a tooth due to gum disease is a last minute resort if it is the best option for your overall health.

  • Tooth Trauma: Trauma to your tooth from an accident, sports injury or more can break, fracture or damage your tooth. If the tooth cannot be repaired, then extraction will be necessary.

  • Wisdom Teeth: If you or your child need your wisdom teeth removed, we can perform the extractions in-office. However, if your wisdom teeth are impacted or are a severe case, we will refer you to an orthodontic surgeon.

Our Approach To Tooth Extractions

You can rest assured that Dr. Eddleman and our experienced dental team will utilize the best techniques and technology to make sure you are as comfortable as possible during your extraction. We will always prioritize your well-being and will make sure to discuss any reconstructive options before we decide that an extraction is the best option for your oral health and needs.

How Does An Extraction Work?

If we determine that you need a tooth extraction, also known as getting a tooth pulled, Dr. Eddleman and our team will do our best to make sure that you feel as comfortable and knowledgeable about the procedure as possible. During the extraction, you can expect:

Dr. Eddleman will inject a local anesthetic in order to numb the area. This will prevent you from feeling any pain during the procedure and will keep you comfortable.

Using a tool called an elevator, Dr. Eddleman will carefully loosen the tooth from the gum.

After the tooth has been loosened, Dr. Eddleman will remove the tooth using forceps.

After the tooth has been extracted, the socket will be cleaned, and sutures, or stitches, will be placed if necessary. To stop any bleeding, we will then place a piece of gauze onto the socket.

Take care to follow any post-procedure instructions from Dr. Eddleman to make your recovery go as smoothly as possible. You may take over-the-counter pain relievers to reduce any discomfort or pain following the extraction. We recommend that you replace your gauze as necessary for about four hours afterwards. To ease any swelling, wrap an ice pack in a thin cloth and ice the area 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off for the first 24 hours after your extraction.

Bone Grafting

If your jaw bone is deteriorating, bone grafting may be necessary. Jaw bone deterioration can happen because of tooth loss or advanced gum disease. Before you can get a dental implant, you will first have to get a bone graft. We utilize state-of-the-art bone grafting techniques to restore and strengthen your jawbone. A bone graft will prepare you for dental implants to ensure a stable and long-lasting solution to replace your missing teeth.

How Does A Bone Graft Work?

A bone graft is a surgical procedure in which bone tissue is transplanted to repair or rebuild bones in the jaw. This can involve using your bone, donated bone or synthetic materials. Bone grafts are usually done in order to prepare for dental implants and to treat jawbone loss. For the procedure, you can expect:

  • Initial Exam: Dr. Eddleman will perform an exam, which may include X-rays or CT scans, to assess your bone loss and determine the best bone grafting technique for your case.

  • Anesthesia: Dr. Eddleman will administer local or general anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure.
  • Graft Material Placement: Depending on the type of graft chosen, Dr. Eddleman will place the graft material in the targeted area. This can involve securing the graft with screws or other fixation devices.

  • Healing Process: Over the next few months, your body will naturally integrate the graft material with your existing bone. The healing process is important for the success of the graft.
  • Recovery And Aftercare: We recommend following any and all post-operative instructions provided to you by Dr. Eddleman, including what pain medications to take during your recovery. We also recommend sticking to soft foods to best promote healing.
